Grail Artist - Drifter Shoots

Drifter Shoots real name is Isaac Wright. He’s a special operations veteran of the United States Army who, suffering from PTSD, traveled the United States photographing cities from previous unexplored angles and perspectives.

How did he start?

After being honorably discharged from the military, Isaac Wright, like many veterans, suffered from mental health problems, including depression and PTSD. In order to cope and make sense of the world, he picked up a camera and started traveling, shooting city scenes from innovative and exciting angles and locations.

What made him create Where My Vans Go?

While Isaac Wright was making sense of a post-military world, he got involved in urban exploring, which is the practice of viewing cities from unique and often dangerous locations, like the tops of towers and ledges of buildings.

When photographing these cities from this perspective, he noticed that his shoes – which were Vans – were in many of the shots. This turned into a deliberate project, chronicling where Isaac’s shoes (and the rest of him) found themselves during their travels.

Art and dealing with PTSD

Many military veterans suffer from PTSD long after they leave the service. Aside from medications and traditional therapy, art and other creative pursuits have been proven to give these former soldiers a creative and positive outlet to express their emotions. This, in turn, helps them to cope with the often debilitating symptoms of this condition.
